Hybrid Column Generation Approaches for Urban Transit Crew Management Problems
نویسندگان
چکیده
T article considers the overall crew management problem arising from the daily operation of an urban transit bus company that serves the metropolitan area of the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Due to its intrinsic complexity, the problem is divided in two distinct subproblems: crew scheduling and crew rostering. We have investigated each of these problems using mathematical programming (MP) and constraint logic programming (CLP) approaches. In addition, we developed hybrid column generation algorithms for solving these problems, combining MP and CLP. The hybrid algorithms always performed better, when obtaining optimal solutions, than the two previous isolated approaches. In particular, they proved to be much faster for the scheduling problem. All the proposed algorithms have been implemented and tested over real-world data obtained from the aforementioned company. The coefficient matrix of the linear program associated with some instances of the scheduling problem contains tens of millions of columns; this number is even larger for the rostering problem. The analysis of our experiments indicates that it was possible to find high-quality, and many times optimal, solutions that were suitable for the company’s needs. These solutions were obtained within reasonable computational times on a desktop PC.

Multiple-Depot Integrated Vehicle and Crew Scheduling
This paper presents two different models and algorithms for integrated vehicle and crew scheduling in the multiple-depot case. The algorithms are both based on a combination of column generation and Lagrangian relaxation. Furthermore, we compare those integrated approaches with each other and with the traditional sequential one on random generated as well as real-world data instances for a subu...
متن کاملBranching Strategies to Improve Regularity of Crew Schedules in Ex-Urban Public Transit
We discuss timetables in ex-urban bus traffic that consist of many trips serviced every day together with some exceptions that do not repeat daily. Traditional optimization methods for vehicle and crew scheduling in such cases usually produce schedules that contain irregularities which are not desirable especially from the point of view of the bus drivers. We propose a solution method which imp...
متن کاملDynamic Aggregation of Set-Partitioning Constraints in Column Generation
Column generation is often used to solve problems involving set-partitioning constraints, such as vehicle-routing and crew-scheduling problems. When these constraints are in large numbers and the columns have on average more than 8–12 nonzero elements, column generation often becomes inefficient because solving the master problem requires very long solution times at each iteration due to high d...
متن کاملCockpit Crew Pairing Problem in Airline Scheduling: Shortest Path with Resources Constraints Approach
Increasing competition in the air transport market has intensified active airlines’ efforts to keep their market share by attaching due importance to cost management aimed at reduced final prices. Crew costs are second only to fuel costs on the cost list of airline companies. So, this paper attempts to investigate the cockpit crew pairing problem. The set partitioning problem has been used for ...
متن کاملA hybrid metaheuristic algorithm for the Integrated Vehicle and Crew Scheduling Problem
This work deals with the Integrated Vehicle and Crew Scheduling Problem (VCSP) in urban mass transit. The Vehicle Scheduling Problem (VSP) consists in creating a daily routine of operation for a fleet of vehicles of a company so that all timetabled trips are covered and the operational costs of such activity reduced, making the best use of the fleet. In the Crew Scheduling Problem (CSP) each cr...
